Stephen Dewey (Stephen Dewey), co-author of the study,
dopamine, apparently, is not the only substance that takes
participate in the action of nicotine on the brain. Nicotine has excitation and
other systems of the brain, including serotonin and noradrenaline.
In this study the rats receiving the dose of nicotine, administered topiramate
or a simple saline solution. Some rats received the first dose of nicotine,
others were previously "podsazheny" on it to simulate the smokers.
In addition, some received only topiramate.
Those animals that received nicotine and neutral solution, increased
content of all three neurotransmitters in the brain. However, the introduction of topiramate
increase the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine were observed. According to scientists,
it may mean some efficacy against nicotine addiction.
In addition, topiramate is itself somewhat increased the level of serotonin in the brain
rats. Earlier studies in volunteers it was shown that preparations
increasing levels of serotonin, reduce the need for smoking, which may also
be attributed to the positive effects of topiramate.
The study is published in the latest issue of the journal Synapse.
